I find downtown to be the best spot for hotels - I get a feel for how the city is laid out and it's a great starting point for exploring. This is especially true for relatively compact cities like Boston, New York, DC, Chicago, and San Francisco. Plus, downtown has easy access to public transportation so I can avoid renting a car.
